It is not difficult to find the ways the teams made it to the tournament?
Twelve teams earned direct qualification spots owing to their ranking on the ICC charts and their performance in the last T20 World Cup. What about the remaining eight teams? They were selected through four regional finals.
Co-Hosts
Being the co-hosts of the tournament, Sri Lanka and India have automatically been given slots. Besides, India walks into the tournament as the reigning champion.
T20 World Cup 2024 Super Eight
The teams that reached the Super Eight in the 2024 edition got an automatic spot in this tournament.
India was among the Super Eight teams, whereas the other seven finalists were:
- Afghanistan
- Australia
- Bangladesh
- England
- South Africa
- United States of America
- West Indies
ICC Team Rankings
The following three positions were taken by three top teams as per the ICC team rankings at the cutoff date. These teams are New Zealand, Pakistan and Ireland.
Americas Qualifier
Since the USA qualified already, the only contender for the 2025 Americas Regional Final was Canada. So it was a piece of cake for them, right?
They went through the disastrous four-team tournament undefeated, scoring victories over the Bermuda, Cayman Islands, and Bahamas teams twice each.
Europe Qualifier
The Netherlands earned their ticket to another T20 World Cup via the 2025 Europe Regional Final, but it was not granted to them easily. The loss to Scotland had complicated the situation, but they managed to win their last league match and found themselves inside the qualifiers.
Who were the Dutch defeating? Italy – the team that was second in the points table and thus qualified for their first-ever T20 World Cup!
Italy won against Guernsey and stunned Scotland, while an unplayed match against Jersey turned their dream into reality.
Africa Qualifier
Eight nations vied for the 2025 Africa Regional Final. Namibia and Uganda were looking to keep their places, while Zimbabwe was hoping for a second chance.
Uganda was eliminated at the group stage, while the other two reached the final without losing any match and thus got their tickets to the event.
Namibia crushed the group stage
opponents: Kenya, Nigeria, and Malawi, while Zimbabwe dealt with Tanzania, Uganda, and Botswana easily. They then went on to defeat Tanzania and Kenya, respectively, in the semis to confirm their qualification.
Asia and East-Asia Pacific (EAP) Qualifier
The focus of the cricket world turned to the Asia-EAP Regional Final right after the Africa Qualifier. The battle for three available spots was fought by nine teams in total.
Out of these nine teams, three were from the last T20 World Cup and the other six were those who came through sub-regional qualifiers. After the group stage, the Super Six rounds included six teams, where Nepal, Oman, and the UAE took the top three positions.
Papua New Guinea could not keep their place, whereas Japan and Qatar were very close to their first big event participation.
When is the T20 World Cup 2026 scheduled?
The 20-over tournament will be held in February and March 2026 in the two Asian countries.
