The much-awaited ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 will be officially inaugurated at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati, in the presence of a grand opening ceremony on the 30th of September. This will set a glorious precedent for the historic tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, running through 30 September to 2 November.
The curtain-raiser show will shine with glitz and glamour, featuring some of the most spectacular Indian artists of the moment, such as Shreya Ghoshal and Angarag Papon Mahanta (Papon), together with the Shillong Choir Chamber. Besides wowing the audience, the festivities will also mark the revival of the tournament in India after 12 long years and will also pay respect to the legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who has recently floated away in Singapore.
Now for the 13th time, the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup will see eight teams battle it out over 34 days across a round-robin format, before the semifinals and the much-await final take place. India always managed to be runners-up twice, in 2005 and 2017, however, they are yet to clinch the elusive trophy.
For skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, this edition holds great significance. It will be her first time leading India in an ODI World Cup; however, it will be the fifth appearance for Kaur on this big stage. India begin their campaign with the opening ceremony acting as the curtain raiser as they take on Sri Lanka, led by Chamari Athapaththu, whom no one would describe as a tame competitor, in the very first game of the tournament at 3 PM IST in Guwahati.
