For years, the mega cricket carnival called Indian Premier League has been the athlete in the high street to generate joy and excitement. The excitement mounts when a game is pushed till the last ball. Those fans get an adrenaline rush when both teams finish off with the same total and the match results with the Super Over. That is why, neutral fans at times wish for a tie in the final over during close games.
This article shall outline every IPL match that finished with a tie, which once again had to have its results decided through the Super Over. The first Super Over ever happened in the 2009 season when the match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) ended in a tie. Both the teams had scored 150 runs in their innings in their respective 20 overs.
In the Super Over, 15 runs were scored by KKR, Chris Gayle hitting three fours in this process. In reply, Yusuf Pathan hit 16 runs off just 4 balls against Ajantha Mendis, winning the match for his team. Next season saw another Super Over contest between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) tied at 136 runs apiece. PBKS won the Super Over chase, hitting 10 runs in just 4 balls against the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan.
During the 2011 and 2012 seasons, there were no ties, but in 2013, two games were decided in Super Overs. In the 21st match of 2013, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) recorded a score of 152/7 while chasing 153 runs against Delhi Capitals (DC). RCB needed 12 runs off 6 balls, with Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers walking out to bat. Only three runs were scored off the first four balls before AB de Villiers smashed back-to-back sixes on the last two balls for an electrifying win for his team.
Earlier that day, in another close match, RCB again faced a Super Over, this time against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). They lost this leg of the contest for failing to chase 20 runs in the six balls allotted to them. The first Super Over, back in 2014, saw RR winning over KKR, which was the result of some scintillating batting by Steve Smith. After a two-year gap in 2015 and 2016, and then in 2017, a Super Over was once again held with the match between now-defunct Gujarat Lions (GL) and Mumbai Indians (MI).
Due to some astute bowling from Jasprit Bumrah in the Super Over, MI claimed victory in that match. In another Super Over in 2019, DC triumphed over KKR with Kagiso Rabada exhibiting his bowling prowess right at the end. Later that season, MI made it a win in the Super Over against SRH after the main match had ended in a tie.
The 2020 IPL season was the most thrilling in terms of close finishes, as four matches went to the Super Over. In fact, the MI-Punjab Kings clash witnessed two Super Overs, with Punjab grabbing yet another nail-biting victory.
On the morning of the multitasking days was filled with the Super Over occasion between KKR and SRH. The first tie of the season was between RCB and MI, with the former winning it courtesy of AB de Villiers brilliance. The Delhi team won the second super over of the season against Punjab.
During IPL 2021, SRH and DC delivered a thriller that ended in a tie. Delhi managed to claim victory in the super over after chasing down the target of eight runs. Considering the present scenario, fans worldwide cannot wait for the IPL 2024 extravaganza as the teams have already raised their preparation and skill level and left the fans sitting on the edge of their seats awaiting the exhilaration of team rivalry.
In the IPL 2025 edition, the very first super over was the match between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, this game saw the brilliance of bowling by Mitchell Starc. The left-arm pacer came to bowl the super over for DC, restricting RR batters to just 11 runs with two run-outs inside the super over. Rules of IPL Super Over:
Super Over shall start 10 minutes after the second innings ends.
The team batting second in the match shall bat first in the Super Over.
The Super Over shall be conducted on the same pitch on which the match has been played.
During the last over, the umpires were at one end, and they shall remain at that end for the Super Over.
The fielding team will be allowed to choose the end from which fielders will bowl.
Fielding restrictions shall be the same as those in effect for the last over of the match.
A maximum of three batsmen (two wickets) and one bowler from each team shall be allowed to play in the Super Over.
In the event of a tie also in the Super Over, the second Super Over shall be played and this process shall go on until a winner is decided. This, however, shall take place within a stipulated time.
