The ICC Women’s World Cup is coming to India in September and October 2025. This will be the 13th edition of the tournament. The Indian team has played well enough to reach the finals twice in the past Women’s ODI Cricket World Cups but haven’t won the title yet.
In the last tournament it was the Australian Women’s Team who lifted the trophy. The final was played at the Christchurch Cricket Stadium in New Zealand where Australia beat England by 71 runs.
So who are the teams with the best track record? Let’s look back at the past winners and top teams in the ICC Women’s World Cup.
A Look Back: The First Women’s World Cup
Interestingly the first women’s cricket World Cup happened a couple of years before the first men’s tournament. In 1973 England hosted the first event. 7 teams participated and England won after defeating Australia in a 60 over match. India wasn’t part of that first competition. Indian women’s cricket team made their debut in 1978 when India hosted the World Cup.
In that first final England scored a huge 279/3 in 60 overs. Enid Bakewell scored 118 and captain Rachael Heyhoe Flint added 64. Australia struggled in their chase and finished at 187/9. Throughout the tournament Bakewell was the highest scorer with 264 runs. Another English player Rosalind Heggs took the most wickets with 12.
Australia’s Victory in 2022
Recently in the 2022 Women’s World Cup Australia beat England by 71 runs to win the title. This was their 7th World Cup title. Led by Meg Lanning the Australian team scored 356/5 in 50 overs after they chose to bat first. They then bowled out England for 285 despite a valiant effort from Natalie Sciver to keep England in the hunt.
The Current Champions: Most World Cup Titles
When it comes to the Women’s World Cup Australia is the clear leader. They have 7 titles to their name. The Australian team has been a dominant force in women’s cricket, winning more ICC trophies than any other team. Their 7 Women’s ODI World Cup wins is the benchmark for other teams. England is the next most successful team. They have 4 World Cup titles which shows how dominant Australia has been.
