It is the ball gauge.
What is a ball gauge in cricket really?
A ball gauge is an instrument that is shaped like a ring. It has two rings that aid umpires in determining whether the ball has lost its original shape or not.
However, the two rings are made up of different sizes. One of the rings has the smallest allowable size and the other one has the largest.
So how do the umpires make use of the ball gauge?
The ball gauge is the tool that helps umpires find out whether the ball measures up to the allowed dimensions. The umpires will attempt to put the ball through both of the rings.
Should the ball be able to pass through one ring but unable to do so from the other, then the ball is considered to be in the allowable shape. However, if the ball is able to pass through both or is not able to pass through either, then the ball is considered to have lost its shape.
What occurs to a ball after it has lost its shape?
When the ball fails the gauge test, it is deemed deformed. After that, the umpires double-check it, and they request a replacement ball.
You must have noticed the fourth umpire dashing onto the field carrying a box full of balls. Inside the box are some previously used cricket balls.
The umpires in the field go through the box and select a ball that is near the condition of the one that is going to be replaced. The ball to be replaced is also put through the gauge test. When the umpires find a suitable match, they give the changed ball to the fielding side.

What is the reason for the change of the deformed ball?
A ball that has lost its shape can be very difficult to play with. The bowlers and batters alike may have to cope with its erratic behavior.
The bowlers will not be able to swing or seam the ball correctly. Batters, on the other hand, may face uneven bounce which can lead to their getting out or even getting injured.
