Sixes are a must and no hesitation in it that no batter misses to hit the ball out of the field in every aspect of T20 cricket.

However, hitting several sixes in just one over is still rare. It’s an enormous task to do and a handful of hitters have done it in the IPL. To the least, they didn’t stop at a couple of great hits but rather attacked with five in an over.

Players Five Sixes in an Over in the IPL

    1. Chris Gayle (RCB) vs Rahul Sharma (Pune Warriors) 2012

Chris Gayle (RCB) vs Rahul Sharma (Pune Warriors) | 2012

You won’t be surprised with this name at all. Chris Gayle was the king of six-hitting for RCB during his time in the IPL.

He turned a dull chase of 183 runs against the Pune Warriors into an interesting match, and it was all thanks to Gayle’s five consecutive sixes that RCB would later win the game.

It was the 13th over of RCB’s innings, and the ball was being bowled by Rahul Sharma. Saurabh Tiwary managed to score a single allowing Gayle to come back on the pitch.

Then, it was crazy at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Gayle drove the ball over long off, then to deep mid-wicket, and through the middle for a straight six to complete his hat trick.

He cleared the ground over long-on for his fourth ball and finished the over with a six to the deep square leg boundary. Though Gayle was unable to last until the end, the 31-run over had swung the momentum of the game in RCB’s favor. He was out after scoring a splendid 81 runs in 48 balls.

    2. Rahul Tewatia (RR) vs Sheldon Cottrell (PBKS) 2020

Rahul Tewatia (RR) vs Sheldon Cottrell (PBKS) | 2020

This list got its second entry eight years later. Still, it was Rahul Tewatia who staged a redemption for a lifetime against Punjab Kings in 2020.

Now with 51 runs required from three overs, Rajasthan Royals (RR) desperately hoped Tewatia would turn the game around. And he did!

After a slow start of 17 off 23 balls, he blasted 47 off just 29 balls! Tewatia annihilated Sheldon Cottrell with five sixes in the 18th over.

Initially going slow, the left-handed batter eventually scored 47 runs off only 29 balls! Tewatia made thirty runs off Cottrell’s last over with five colossal sixes.

The first one was a massive six that went over the long leg fence. Next, he got the ball over the square leg and it was another six. He moved on to the wide long off and midwicket with the sixes.

Then Cottrell received a bit of a break since Tewatia did not manage to hit the ball. But the next ball, he cleared the midwicket boundary and that made it five sixes in total.

It is quite possible that if there hadn’t been a dot ball on the fifth delivery, we could have witnessed a six on the trot. Regardless, Tewatia’s destruction made RR win the chase with a margin of three balls left.

    3. Ravindra Jadeja (CSK) vs Harshal Patel (RCB) 2021

Ravindra Jadeja (CSK) vs Harshal Patel (RCB) | 2021

First, the third case is in no way prepared to take a long time. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were about to settle for a low score against RCB.

But Ravindra Jadeja’s bat came in just right. And there could be no better time than the final over.

Harshal Patel might not have understood what was about to hit him after a spell of well-controlled bowling. His numbers read 3 for 14 before he stepped into the last over. But up came the batting fireworks from Jadeja turning it to 3 for 51 with a 37-run over!

The left-handed batter started it with smashing the first six between long-on and deep midwicket. A full-length ball was tonked for another six next in line.

He clobbered the waist-high no ball for a six over deep midwicket and that was the next ball which was a bonus. Jadeja sent the free hit yet again to the midwicket.

Jadeja then took a couple of runs as a fielder dropped his catch. This life-line gave him the window to go in for a record, as he converted a low full-toss into six over long-on for his fifth.

Jadeja nearly went for another six in the last ball, but it was just that his timing was slightly off and he settled for a four as it landed quite inside.

    4. Rinku Singh (KKR) vs Yash Dayal (GT) 2023

Rinku Singh (KKR) vs Yash Dayal (GT) | 2023

Your squad has to score 28 runs in five balls. At this point, you have two choices: either aim for five sixes or four sixes and a four.

You would probably pick the first option. So did Rinku Singh against Gujarat Titans in 2023.

The little powerhouse managed to snatch an unbelievable victory for Kolkata Knight Riders through his five flawless hits. After Umesh Yadav had bowled him the last ball of the innings, Rinku remained cool under pressure as KKR crossed the finish line without any further hurdles.

He sent the second ball to wide long-off before the third one went over deep backward square leg. With a flick of the wrist, Rinku made it three in a row with another six over long-off. Then he went over the long-on boundary twice to take KKR home.

    5. Riyan Parag (RR) vs Moeen Ali (KKR) 2025

Riyan Parag (RR) vs Moeen Ali (KKR) | 2025

Riyan Parag had tweeted he would hit four sixes in an over in IPL 2023, which didn’t come off that year.

Fast forward to 2025, and he nailed not four but five. And he didn’t stop there. He clubbed six maximums on the six consecutive balls he faced, albeit across two overs!

Moeen Ali, who had a good game till the 12th over, faced the heat. Parag lit up the 13th over with back-to-back sixes over square leg, long on, square leg, long on, and finally long off.

He was back on strike on the second ball of the 14th over. And Paarag reverse-swept his way into the ‘six-ball, six-sixes’ exclusive club.

His carnage, though, wasn’t enough as RR faltered in the chase by a run against KKR.
